The Week That Was 5/14 – 5/20

  • After being swept at home by the Cleveland Indians, the Twins went on the road and started a four game winning streak by sweeping the Detroit Tigers and taking the first two games of their series against the Milwaukee Brewers.  The Brew Crew snapped the Twinkies four game streak by blowing them out 16-4 this afternoon.  Due to the Twins pitching staff poor performance, backup catcher Drew Butera was asked to take the mound for the Twins in the 8th innings.  Butera, who topped out at 94mph on the radar gun, pitched a scoreless 8th, giving up no hits, one walk, and struck out former Twins center fielder Carlos Gomez.  The Twins finished this week with a 4-3 record and approved their overall record to 14-27.  The Twins have Monday off before they head to the south side of Chicago and start three game series against the White Sox on Tuesday night.
  • The Minnesota Lynx will try to become the first team in nearly 10 years to repeat as WNBA champions.  After the championships rings were handed out and championship banner was unveiled, the title defense was on this afternoon at Target Center. The Lynx got off on the right foot by winning their season opener 105-83 against the Phoenix Mercury.  Seimone Augustus lead the way for the Lynx with 19 points and five rebounds before she left the game late in the 3rd quarter with bruised ribs.  Minnesota will travel to New York to take on the Liberty this Tuesday night.
